Toners – A Skincare Must-Have or Not?
Remember the old skincare mantra: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize? Nowadays, most people have replaced “Tone” with “Treat”, as in using some sort of serum to treat any particular issues -acne, anti-aging, hydrating, etc.
Some simply find toners ineffective and not essential, while others claim that toners adjust the pH of your skin to allow products to work more efficiently. Diane Hibbard, the Skin Care Director of Burke Williams – a super luxurious spa chain in California explained it as this: a bottle of toner is relatively inexpensive while a bottle of treatment serum can be pricey. Toner helps adjust the pH of your skin must faster than otherwise, and by doing it, allows any skincare treatment applied afterwards to work more efficiently. After all, all the active ingredients in whatever serum, mask, or even moisturizer is designed to work at its optimal level when the pH of your skin is balanced.
On the other hand, a 2008 post by The Beauty Brains cited a Smartskincare.com article claiming that toners, especially ones containing witch hazel or alcohol, does more harm than good. Only people with oily skin really should be using toners. As for the pH argument? “Unless you have very oily skin that needs to be degreased, don’t worry too much about using a pH balanced toner,” writes The Beauty Brains.
I personally go back and forth when it comes to toners. If I’m already deep cleansing with my Clarisonic, I skip the toning step. But if I’m using an oil cleanser like the Shu Uemera Cleansing Oil, I’ll go over my skin with a toner. It helps get excess oil that water alone doesn’t rinse off.
If you like toners and are in the market for one, check out some of my favorites below:
Revitalizing Toner by Proactiv
As part of the famous Proactiv 3-Step program, this toner helps clear off anything your cleanser doesn’t AND help reduce acne. It contains glycolic acid which helps in exfoliating your skin! Plus it’s gentle to the touch and does not try out your skin.
EmbryoLisse Flower Essence Toner
Containing a blend of orange blossom and rose water, Eau de Beaute Rosamelis (Flower Essence Toner) is great for sensitive and dry skin. It adds a little hydration to your skin after cleansing and it’s also great as a refreshing spritzer throughout the day. Rose water is extremely soothing, so tuck this into your beach bag to help cool and soothe your skin after you’ve been out in the sun all day.
Clarins Toning Lotion With Camomile
I love drinking camomile tea – it’s so calming and relaxing, the best after a long day of work. The Toning Lotion with Camomile from Clarins contains camomile and other botanical extracts to soothe your skin. Plus it’s moisturizing too, perfect for those with dry skin.
